SECRETS TO A LONG LIFE!

What is a secret of long life?
The first answer comes to our mind is , it is genetics.

Is it genetics really?
Genes do play a role in longevity.Nir Barzilai, a geneticist at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, reports that centenarians are 20 times as likely as the average person to have a long lived relative. But a Swedish study of identical twins separated at birth and reared apart concluded that only about 20 to 30 percent of longevity is genetically determined.

Is life style dominate?
Oh yes ,it is. Studies show that the life style is the more dominant factor.

What attitude should be towards life?
  • Get to work
  • Be cheerful
  • Look for something fun to do.
It is a whole attitude. Interviews with people who have crossed their 90's show that they are blessed and they have worked on it. Get to work, be cheerful and look for something fun to do is their attitude.

Attributes that dubs longevity's version of three R's??
  • Resolution
  • Resourcefulness
  • Resilience

Throughout long life, people take hardships in stride , traipse blithely over obstacles and convert many into building blocks. Always adhere to a regimen of a careful diet, hard work and regular exercise.

Be extrovert adds a point to long life?
Oh yes. According to the findings of the New England Centenarian Study at Boston University, to be extrovert is a healthy dose of self-esteem and it leads to strong ties to family and community.
A study of Centenarians in Sardinia found that people who turn to 100 , have extensive social networks and maintain strong ties with family and friends. They are less likely to be depressed than the average 60-year-old.

How to strong the bond with family and friends?
If you understand these relationships, it becomes very easy to go far . Otherwise, it is the most difficult job. Blood relationships are made by Allah and we are bound to make strong those ties. Unfortunately many people take these relationships for granted  and lead miserable life. They never get contented and satisfied.
Non-blood relationships are equally sweet and dear. But here we have the opportunity to select the people for relationships. We choose them according to our whim on selfish or non selfish basis.
Every relationship requires time, sympathy, affability, honesty, generosity and love. If all these seeds are sowed in the land of relationship, we get the garden of love as a result.

Do Optimists live longer than pessimists?
Yes, studies indicate.Hilary A.Tindle of University of Pittsburgh Medical Center found that among 97,000 women followed for eight years, those deemed optimistic were significantly less likely to die from heart disease and all causes than were pessimistic women, whom she described  as "cynically hostile".
The optimists are less likely to have high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol. They take better care of their health.

What about Stress and Traumas of life?
According to one study, survivors of traumatic life events learn to cope better with stress and poverty and are more likely to live a long life.
Everyone should facilitate a long , wholesome and productive life.

Love life!
Live a healthy  life!

Height phobia

WHAT IS IT?
Acrophobia (from the Greek: ἄκρον, ákron , meaning "peak, summit, edge" and φόβος, phóbos, "fear") is an extreme or irrational fear of heights. It belongs to a category of specific phobias, called space and motion discomfort that share both similar etiology and options for treatment.
Acrophobia can be dangerous, as sufferers can experience a panic attack in a high place and become too agitated to get themselves down safely.
"Vertigo" is often used (incorrectly) to describe a fear of heights, but it is more accurately a spinning sensation that occurs when one is not actually spinning. It can be triggered by looking down from a high place but this alone does not describe vertigo. True vertigo can be triggered by almost any type of movement (e.g. standing up, sitting down, walking) or change in visual perspective (e.g. squatting down, walking up or down stairs, looking out of the window of a moving car or train). Vertigo is qualified as height vertigo when referring to dizziness triggered by heights.[citation needed] Between 2 and 5 percent of the general population suffer from acrophobia, with twice as many women affected than men .
CAUSES:

Traditionally, acrophobia has been attributed, like other phobias, to conditioning or a traumatic experience involving heights. Recent studies have cast doubt on this explanation; fear of falling, along with fear of loud noises, is one of the most commonly suggested inborn or non-associative fears. The newer non-association theory is that fear of heights is an evolved adaptation to a world where falls posed a significant danger. The degree of fear varies and the term phobia is reserved for those at the extreme end of the spectrum. It has been argued by researchers that fear of heights is an instinct found in many mammals, including domestic animals and human beings. Experiments using what are known as "visual cliffs" have shown human infants and toddlers, as well as other animals of various ages, to be reluctant in venturing onto a glass floor with a view of a few meters of apparent fall-space below it. While an innate cautiousness around heights is helpful for survival, an extreme fear can interfere with the activities of everyday life, such as climbing up a flight of stairs or a ladder or even standing on a chair.
A possible contributing factor is dysfunction in maintaining balance. In this case the anxiety is both well founded and secondary. The human balance system integrates proprioceptivevestibular and nearby visual cues to reckon position and motion. As height increases visual cues recede and balance becomes poorer even in normal people. However, most people respond by shifting to more reliance on theproprioceptive and vestibular branches of the equilibrium system.
An acrophobic, on the other hand, continues to overrely on visual signals whether because of inadequate vestibular function or incorrect strategy. Locomotion at a high elevation requires more than normal visual processing. The visual cortex becomes overloaded resulting in confusion. Some proponents of the alternative view of acrophobia warn that it may be ill-advised to encourage acrophobics to expose themselves to height without first resolving the vestibular issues. Research is underway at several clinics.

Problems Encountered By People With A Phobia Of Heights

  • Going upstairs
  • Being in a tall building
  • Driving near a drop, cliff, valley etc
  • Too afraid to fly
  • Going up a ladder
  • Looking down a stairwell
  • Watching a TV program or film involving heights
  • And obviously being near a steep drop, cliff etc

The key variable between stress and possible illness is how effectively you are able to handle stressful experiences and your ability to exercise and decrease you internal stressors.

Statistically, 40% to 50% of people who score above 300 may become ill within the year, due to their immune system shutting down. Only 5% to 10 % of people who score below 200 experience such problems or illness.

obsession

WHAT IS OBSESSION?
Obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder characterized by intrusive thoughts that produce anxiety, by repetitive behaviors aimed at reducing anxiety, or by a combination of such thoughts (obsessions) and behaviors (compulsions). Symptoms may include repetitive hand-washing; extensive hoarding; preoccupation with sexual or aggressive impulses, or with particular religious beliefs; aversion to odd numbers; and nervous habits, such as opening a door and closing it a certain number of times before one enters or leaves a room. These symptoms can be alienating and time-consuming, and often cause severe emotional and economic loss. The acts of those who have OCD may appear paranoid and come across to others as psychotic. However, OCD sufferers generally recognize their thoughts and subsequent actions as irrational, and they may become further distressed by this realization.

OCD is the fourth-most common mental disorder and is diagnosed nearly as often as asthma and diabetes mellitus. In the United States, one in 50 adults has OCD. The phrase "obsessive–compulsive" has become part of the English lexicon, and is often used in an informal or caricatured manner to describe someone who is meticulous, perfectionistic, absorbed in a cause, or otherwise fixated on something or someone. Although these signs may be present in OCD, a person who exhibits them does not necessarily have OCD, and may instead have obsessive–compulsive personality disorder (OCPD), an autism spectrum disorder, or no clinical condition. Multiple psychological and biological factors may be involved
